Reviewed Albums

Father John Misty - Mahashmashana

7.5/10

Best Tracks: Mahashmashana -- Screamland -- I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All

In his sixth studio album release, Father John Misty (Josh Tillman) relays the delicacy of nuance, measuring reality among sweet string arrangements and Soft Rock rhythms.

Resplendent Baroque melodies contrast well with Tillman's deep resonance, fostering steady movements that push forward into gallant crescendos. These measured buildups give time for the development of rich poetry describing humanity and its many paradoxes.

Only lessened by a few overly conservative Chamber Pop progressions, Tillman offers an exceptionally well-crafted and soothing reflection on philosophical dilemma.

Vylet Pony - Monarch of Monsters

7/10

Best Tracks: Survivor's Guilt -- The Wallflower Equation -- Huntress

EDM artist, Vylet Pony unleashes a diverse Noise Rock affair, delving deep into harsh landscapes of gutting guitars and flittering electronics.

Monarch of Monsters is an incredibly ambitious manifesto of regret and self-loathing, stuffed in a detailed narrative of betrayal, spiritual discovery, and destructive power dynamics. The ambition displayed is awe-inspiring, allowing gargantuan assemblies of Industrialism to align with grungy Rock riffs and sugary EDM accents.

While the sound and concept of the record are undeniably flavorful and compellingly dynamic, they often come off as overproduced due to the sheer volume of clashing elements. This, alongside a tiresome track-to-track cadence, prevents the album from fully realizing the impact of its creativity. Nonetheless, Vylet Pony is an artist overflowing with talent and aspiration, both at display in this wonderfully decorated burst of anger and remorse.
