Calliope Music

Calliope Music Review of the Week 파란노을 [Parannoul] - After The Night Korean Shoegaze Act, Parannoul Metamorphosizes in a Monumental Live Performance, Transforming Stunning Midi Tracks into Fully Instrumented Emo and Indie Rock Epics. Formerly electronic produced shoegaze is inherited by a full band, comprised of multiple guitars, drums, bass, keyboard and even trumpet. Parannoul leads the band in performing songs off his last few solo efforts, as well as a 46 minute version of the single, "Into the Endless Night." After The Night sees improvised forms of each tune, letting a live setting embrace anarchic noise and crestfallen nostalgia. This raw sentimentalism along with boundary stretching indie compositions generate an awe-inspiring triumph for all alternative music. In the context of Parannoul's recent discography, After The Night acts as a beacon for the artist's talent and creativity. The live album contains physical manifestations of some of his mos...

Review of the Week: JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES

Calliope Music Review of the Week JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES Experimental Hip-Hop Luminaries, Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA Detonate with Radical Sampling and Comical Testimonials in this Eccentric Hyper Hip-Hop Escapade. Saturated bass, breakneck drum patterns and an array of genre-bending samples pave the way for Danny and Peggy's jocular and absurdist rapping. While not all the experiments on this distinctive and abrasive album work well, the two artists create a cutting-edge soundscape that is equally entertaining as unconventional. Although both rappers are known for their experimental ability and tendency towards the off-beat, SCARING THE HOES presents a new level of unorthodox production. JPEGMAFIA breaks new ground with tumultuous beats, high-intensity refrains and eclectic, as well as avant-garde sampling. The production on this 36 minute LP is next to none, and presents a hyper sound, loud and comp...

Review of the Week: Swans - Live Rope

Calliope Music Review of the Week Swans - Live Rope Breaking the Barrier Between Brain and Universe In the endless expanse of matter and molecule, sound begins to usher its influence in thin wavelets and gentle heat. It reaches the ear of man stupendously fast, unleashing its undying influence subject to the crude interpretations of the brain. The most provocative and influential of these interpretations is that of music. There is a swirling notation; a rhythm, that captivates the ear like no other. Michael Gira and his Swans are a group that understands this ear-to-universe connection on a comprehensive level. Enter Live Rope , an amalgam of the most fundamental interpretations of rhythm and music, turning over the barrier between brain and spirit in the process. The 148-minute live album (182 minutes for the CD edition) is a Brobdingnagian effort, empowering the group's palatial Post-Rock compositions with the tortured spirits of Gothic Rock and the brutal ...

Review of the Week: Swans - The Beggar

Calliope Music Review of the Week Swans - The Beggar Renowned Experimental Rock Group, Swans Enter the Charred Sewers of Death through Primal Post-Rock and Discomposed Gothic Country in their 16th Studio LP. Deliberate tempos, hypnotic bass drums, expansive harmonies and snarly vocals spiral in a spiritual affair, creaking to the sinister nuances of death and deterioration. Band founder and leader, Michael Gira utilizes steady cadences to deliver spacious hauntings of human nature, begging to stay afloat amid prophetic disfigurement. Slow-moving progressions do lead to moments of sedate emptiness, yet Gira nevertheless succeeds in pulling the listener down into the depths of his darkest manifestation: the grotesque inevitability of expiration. Swans are known for their wicked experimentation within the Rock scene. Whether through their debut Noise and No Wave industrial slaughter, Filth, or their shamanistic Post-Rock thrashings of the 2010s,...
