UK Hip Hop Artist, slowthai Explodes with Articulated Anger, Reckless Ecstasy and Personal Reflection on this Anthemic Post-Punk Record.
slowthai raps fervently over upbeat punk grooves and modular dance beats. Sugary drums slap alongside frenzied guitar and carefree bass, contrasting with slower, more dramatic piano/acoustic ballads. slowthai uses bright synth instrumentation to juxtapose deep reflections of raging insecurities, including addiction, loathing, and destructive tendencies. These harmful characteristics provide a dark context to the overall theme of happiness and finding what makes one smile, despite all the rampage in one's mind and the world itself. Furious lyricism and fierce hooks give an irresistible energy to somber tracks and exemplify the raw storytelling displayed on this 38 minute LP. Other than a few instances of cliché writing and incomplete sonic developments, UGLY is an exceedingly engaging mass of unfiltered outrage and practical optimism.
