Liturgy - 93696

Black Metal Outfit, Liturgy Delivers a Striking Mass of Spiritual Glitch and Avant-Garde Treasures.
Led by vocalist Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, Liturgy's 6th studio album is a truly epic demonstration of wrath and belief. The core tracks of the 82 minute LP are perfervid profusions of sickly overhead guitar, high-octane bass playing and the unrelenting pummeling of barbarous drums. This uncompromised instrumental violence is contrasted with calmer interludes including operatic vocals, synth keys and even an ocarina section. Liturgy also makes use of brief glitches in the production, adding suspense to colossal riffs and intense progressions.

All of the while, Hendrix sings in unintelligible howls, fierce on their own, but powerless to the monsters of the surrounding instruments. When the lyrics are made out, fleshy and medieval imagery is used to describe horrifying love affairs and the pursuit of enlightenment. While often difficult to distinguish, these harsh vocals coupled with Choral-like harmonies fashion a vicious, yet feminine tonality.

The main kick of 93696 is its technical and saga-like composition. Chamber sounds soar to create a fantastical atmosphere while brutal metal works with brisk time-signatures to transcend ferocity into nirvana. However, not all progressions reach satisfying sonic destinations. Some interludes fail to compete with the richness that the the central tracks provide and a couple of the longer arrangements lose sight of their best sounds at times.

Despite these blemishes, Liturgy is still able to communicate an enthralling set of wicked and demiurgic avant-garde invocations.
