Calliope Music Review of the Week
This Is the Glasshouse - 867
Return Wayward
Home is not only a place. It is a robust source; a source ingrained in the development of the emotional impetus of a person.
867, the area code for the greater Northern Canada territory is home to the songwriter, Ezekiel Dukart. Dukart and his band, This Is the Glasshouse explore home as a means of deep-rooted inspiration, reflecting on the nuances of Northern Canada and its connection to personal love, identity, and growth.
Musically, the nostalgia of home and the grandness of geography are captured by sprawling arrangements of Progressive guitar riffs, hat-heavy drums, and cavalier saxophones. Whimsical movements form as jazzy acoustics clash with distortion-led atmospherics, vintage keys, and whirring synths. This edge complements a fantastical assortment of bold glockenspiel, tangy harpsichord, and soft vibraphone.
Glasshouse takes many Indie influences to heart and yields a patented sound, embracing clamor and protracted progressions bathed in flamboyant drama. This impression is powerful, but cannot hide Dukart's pinched vocals and inconsistent mixing. These two factors bother the sonic equilibrium of the record track-for-track but are not entirely destructive of the overall experience.
Regardless, 867 is an exciting project thick with harsh reminiscence and substantial instrumentation. The fantasies, the realities, and the existentialism of home coalesce into one magnificent and personal landscape.
