Lankum - False Lankum

Irish Folk Band, Lankum Transforms Folk Tunes of Old in this Funereal Odyssey of Profound Harmonies and Avant-Folk Blues.
Lankum envelops the head with droning Uilleann Pipes and Concertina alongside soft acoustic guitar, organ, harp and padded drums. The Dublin based group exudes soul with stunningly rich harmonies where both male and female vocals massage the brain's deepest senses for melancholia.

These dark instrumentals set the stage for avant-garde forms of Irish legends and several original folk stories. The 70 minute album tells classic tales of grief, love and the supernatural, fit with maritime and gothic imagery. Lankum breathes life into these oral tales of old through hypnotic chord developments and marvelous vocals.

Despite the mesmerizing nature of the instrumentals, some tracks do see overly repetitious versus drag on. The same is noticeable in a couple unvaried progressions as well. Regardless, atmospheric interludes and concise transitions give the album an experiential boost, as each story conglomerates into one, consolidated book.

Ultimately, False Lankum functions as an incarnation of the deep-rooted feelings of ancient anecdotes, light in the air of the open sea, but heavy in the hearts of mournful lovers.
