Olivia Rodrigo- GUTS

Pure Youthful Balladry

A mingling of guitar fused Rock cuts and piano based Singer-Songwriter craft an album full of teenage angst and adolescent love. All passages run through the Pop verse chorus formula, either fulminating with snare heavy drumming and raging guitar refrains, or settling into slower moving choruses of vocal vehemence.

On the more fast-paced tracks, Rodrigo elicits robust vitality through lighthearted vocals and blazing Pop Rock progressions. On the more deliberate tracks, soft keys and echoed drums give space for Rodrigo's infectious voice and melancholy apprehension towards romanticism.

While genuine messages and a fine instrumental pallet originate engaging sentiment, forthright juvenility and several uninspired Pop movements prevent the project from maturing further into a distinct contemporary category of its own.

Overall, GUTS serves a captivating look into a young star's emotional and artistic maturation in an often cruel world. Even with a decent sample of sterile developments and unripe sensibility, the Rock inspired ballads highlight what it is to be young: confused, lost, and regretful, but also diverting, fresh, and full of contagious energy.

Best Tracks: all-american bitch -- bad idea right? -- vampire -- ballad of a homeschooled girl -- pretty isn't pretty
