DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - Destiny

The Never Ending Rooftop Party

Chopped vocal samples, panning synths, pattering drum fills, twinkling chimes, and pulsating bass contrive expansive environments of convivial electronics and sparkling plunderphonics. Each track contains a mouthwatering density of dancing rhythms and phasing instrumentalism, continuously bouncing to upbeat House progressions.

While the atmospherics and technical assembly of Destiny are quite stellar, the project is antagonized by muddled cohesion and inflated movements. Where many songs are explicit in there sonic narrative through crisp synth developments and catchy vocal refrains, an equal number of tracks are plagued with unfocused progressions, aimlessly drifting through medial samples and unvaried drum patterns. This effect is multiplied the longer the album proceeds, becoming outright bloated at the end of the four hours (even when consumed in smaller snippets).

Despite major bloating concerns, DJ Sabrina's lush instrumentation is inevitable in creating mesmerizing dance tunes with a profuse genial quality, unlike any of their contemporaries. In the end, Destiny can be seen as a never ending party, for better or worse. It sucks one in with an unparalleled joviality through its lively and rich production, but ultimately leaves one hungover before their ride home, due to overinflated concepts.
