underscores - Wallsocket

Riveting Propulsions of an Electroacoustic Midwest

An impressive array of raving synths, anodic drums, rallying bass, chirping guitar, and fizzing electronics bounce their way through ecstatic Electropop progressions. A blend of rhythmic vocal samples and high-voltage stylophone boost refrains to another level of infectious energy. These upbeat tracks are balanced by atmospheric projections of Indie Rock, where smooth acoustics and polished bass guitar add mood to dark melodies.

This eclectic disposition of sound is complemented by a narrative following three girls in the Midwestern town of Wallsocket, Michigan. Stories of bank robberies, stalking, financial privilege, grooming, transphobia, and parental neglect connect the three girls and their lingering trauma. Eccentric imagery and emotional anecdotes from the point of view of each girl build a wacky, yet representational world of troubled youth. As each girl relays their realities and reflects on the consequences of their actions in this fictional world, they are forced to leave the town and each other, but learning to grow in the process.

This theme of growth out of uncomfortable circumstance is mirrored by the music itself. Sizzling synth and harsh noise swelters, leading to compulsive refrains reminiscent of the most addictive Dance-Pop. Even in the patience of the acoustic based tracks, harmonies build, blossoming into deep resonations with a sinister edge.

All of the while, underscores and guests slay compounded instrumentals with decorated vocals. Punk-inspired yells bolster fiery Rock tunes before layered Hyperpop choruses make sure the listener will be replaying the moment in their mind well after the song is over. As mentioned previously, darker harmonies contrast otherwise scorching vocalizations, balancing the air between anthems and ballads.

Although a couple tracks teeter on the line of novelty, the concept album works phenomenally in creating an uplifting sound with a detailed world to work in. Escorted by rich compounds of electroacoustic luminosity and a telltale narrative of trauma and growth, Wallsocket makes its way outside of a little town in Michigan, and into the heart of any brave listener.
