what is your name? - My Name Is...

Twisting Lo-fi Density Renders a Salient Epidemic of Solitude

Bullish Indie compositions are sculpted by brazen bass grooves, clamoring snares, zipping guitar, and psychotropic atmospherics. Sprightly violin and viola usher bright refrains followed by flickering zips and distorted reverse guitar solos.

A bizarre amalgam of cavernous acoustic guitar, sharp electric guitar, and rippling electronic signals create bustling kaleidoscopic environments, inescapable to any heedful listener. Furthermore, the abnormal convulsions that are the drum progressions emanate a certain clamminess and anxiety that pervade throughout the album, as well as the listener's mind.

All contorting guitar play and dense crescendos lead to a simple, yet all too pertinent subject: isolation, and the despondency and confusion that accompanies it. what is your name? (wiyn) speaks of a developing epidemic among people of the Western world, especially young men. As wiyn describes themselves in the tracks, 'aM i aL0ne ! ? (or just crazy ! ?)' and '21 and lonely', many young men out of secondary school generate a crippling loneliness, depriving them of meaningful relationships and the sociability needed to sustain mental wellness. Here, the Indie rocker places the blame on silent lovers, as well as self-neglect, leading to a crushing spiral of seclusion and depressive thought. This topic of dejection is clearly heard throughout the music of My Name Is..., as outcrying masses of instruments and wobbling vocals delineate striking Emo passages.

While the overall structure of the project is intensely meticulous, it remains particularly rough around the edges. wiyn is an inexperienced vocalist, and it shows mightily as notes tremble over the less dense portions of production. The LP is also limited by its production value, leading to instances of raucous mixing and blown out tones.

Fortunately, these negatives are secondary to the earnestness the record has to offer. wiyn makes the most of lo-fi manufacturing, designing dazzling displays of undulating distortion and vibrant psychedelics. Although it presents pulverizing wavelets of abandonment and seclusion, My Name Is... leaves the listener wanting more, as they search for their own cures to the forlorn.
