Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the Garden...
Nebulous Jazz Informs Afflictions of Past and Present
Weary saxophone, burbling drums, moaning organ, and bopping double bass melt together in messy, yet uniform distributions of avant-garde melancholy. In the midst of swarming instrumentals, Roberts recites a story of tragic motherhood and self-empowerment.
The fuel of this record is its mix of hectic freedom and somber ambiance. This duo along with eloquent spoken word give a lively, yet exhausted feel, highly reflective of the mindset of the narrator.
Although the record suffers from many incoherent and non-cohesive passages, the themes of motherhood and empowerment are highlighted within the haunting despondency of Free Jazz developments. All in all, a trembling album in both consistency and traumatic effect.
