Kim Gordon - The Collective

The Slaughterhouse of Industrial Apathy

Mechanical Hip Hop instrumentals are forged through obliterating guitar-work, cataclysmic 808 bass, razor-sharp kicks, claps, and cutting Industrial synths. Agonizing levels of distortion and robotic effects give off a coldness that is reflected in the vocals.

Gordon takes an avant-garde approach, utilizing spoken word and faint moments of heavily autotuned refrains to discuss a modern age of toxicity through a potent indifference. This monotone passivity is an ironic touch, as topics of misogyny, toxic masculinity, and disassociation paint the picture of a highly injurious society obsessed with sex, drugs, and social media; all selfish pursuits. It is this "Collective" where the album gets its name, as Gordon criticizes horde mentality and its many detriments.

While the vocals do a fantastic job at relaying a strong message, they often fall flat compared to the boldness of the production. Alongside drowning vocals, the song structures at times take a hit due to the audacious manufacturing, going one way over the line between genuine innovation and camp. Either way, the record still accomplishes its goal of total disruption.

If there were only one word to describe the sound of the 40 minute album, it would be "disruptive." Ultimately, every choice made in the construction of this record leads to obstructing the norm. Whether it's through a factory of savage Noise beats, or a brutal nonchalance, The Collective delivers in its calling for crippling the basis of what is and should be accepted.
