Kamasi Washington - Fearless Movement

Bountiful Rhythm Leads a Spirit Impetus

In Kamasi Washington's first major project in six years, the Jazz composer embarks on an abundant journey, rich in its exploration of rooted spirits and modern Fusion. From the subtle nuances of minimalism to the blazing collages of Fusion and Jazz Rap, Fearless Movement is just that, a brave expedition through Jazz and its subsidiaries.

The essence of this album is its groove, and many variations of groove. Eclectic instrumentals freely waltz together, as trickling piano, burning horns, bellowing bass, and glassy drumming weave in colorful arrangements. Add in an incredible array of solo-work and improvisation, and the sound embodies a truly exuberant, yet mature pneuma. Although some passages are consumed too long by their digressions into lyricism and vocal refrain, the vigor of the record is not lost. As seen most profoundly on the dramatic finale, 'Prologue,' the record clutches rhythm by the roots, squeezing every ounce of verve unto the listener, all the while standing proudly in valiance.
