MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks

Misery, Made in America

Flush crackles of electric guitar, polished drumming, and a crestfallen Western tone trod along modest tempos, easing in a slack Country Rock sound. Honing his Magnolia Electric Co. influence, MJ Lenderman portrays a lame character, disappointed in his own decisions, but content with washing all away in a cold drink. Unembellished poetry and an odd use of American symbolism express a genuine sorrow masked in witty satire.

While a couple of the softer passages lie limp in bygone phases of Americana, the overall impression is far from plain. Lenderman's dry pitch reflects the album's themes of dejection and monotonous social cycles, making fun of the dull moments in life. This is complemented by a balanced level of detail in the instrumentals, allowing sliding guitar, worried organ, and jolly fiddles to blend tastefully into the Country soundscape.

All in all, Manning Fireworks is an immensely consoling release, planting itself in the ground with an impressive equilibrium between raw Country and smooth Slacker Rock. Lendermen accomplishes a sweet integration of ideas, effortlessly depicting a modern American view of wit and woe.
