E L U C I D - REVELATOR
An Incorporeal Revelation
Abstract rapper and producer, E L U C I D (Elucid) returns with a statement piece of a solo album; an incorporeal revelation.
Silvery Illbient beats fizzle in and out of existence, washing away in whizzing synthesizers and humming bass. A traditional drum set is warped with phasors, ushering Avant patterns alongside echoed samples and omniscient vocals. All this is used to display the sinister and familiarly grimy soundscape of Elucid's New York underground production style. Then there are the lyrics, a Brobdingnagian conjecture of illusory imagery and cultural reference. Almost every idea is abstractly connected to the 'Five-Percent Nation,' an Islam-influenced Afro-American Nationalist movement. This further heightens the record's spiritual themes, framing it as an essential perspective of the new world.
As is a common issue with many of Elucid's work, Revelator's commitment to the abstract can be overly vague at times, leaving a hazy memory of what preceded it. This ultimately leads to less memorable moments throughout the 45-minute runtime. Regardless, the cloudy atmospherics and obscure lyricism leave a treasure trove of intrigue to come back to upon repeat listens, making the album a standout, even among a highly competitive East-Coast Hip Hop scene.
