Xiu Xiu - 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto With Bison Horn Grips
The Bleeding Discotheque
Textures ablaze, Xiu Xiu's 14th studio album is a prodigious sound, intense in its fervent sexuality and hot in its Industrial timbre. Most tracks employ a harsh eclecticism, as flurries of sharp guitar, gory bass, and racing synthesizer smash into one another, falling perfectly into place amidst chaos. The percussion makes this tumultuous yet balanced positioning possible, laying down diabolical kick beats and dominant cymbal rhythms. A few tracks substitute the scorching percussion for tempered bass lines and tense string arrangements, adding fluidity to the 36-minute record.
While the tracks 'Pale Flower' and 'Bobby Bland' offer a less engaging existentialism, 13" is remarkably dependable in its strength. The duo converts Avant-garde instrumentalism into powerfully concise Rock songs, whirring and spitting at every turn. Cold and noisy, the album manages to hug trauma, embracing it as it blooms into an identity of desperation, violence, and dance. One can only behold with gleaming eyes the ensnaring diversity of Xiu Xiu, twirling and hurling themselves into sanguinary discotheque.
