boygenius - the record

Indie Trio, boygenius Explore Stoic Self-Hatred, Bubbling Friendship and Nihilistic Love on this Tender Soft Rock Debut.
Warm acoustic guitar, jangly drums and glossy atmospherics inaugurate gloomy harmonies and breathy singing. The three singer-songwriters; Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers bring different tones to a collective perspective on emotional damage, relationships, cynicism, gender conflict, musical influences and their connection to each other.

The supergroup employ blunt wordplay to discuss their trauma, often citing ironic anecdotes that give a sense of humor to devastating feelings. Many references to influences such as Elliot Smith, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen bolster somber and fearful stories of reflection. This witty lyricism along with melodramatic indie instrumentals establish a refined darkness to brief folk tracks.

As a trio, boygenius creates a denser sound than each of their individual efforts. This results in a fuller indie experience, diversified by each of their perspectives. At the same time, some concepts feel cut off, as the three artists compete for time to flesh out their verses in the context of relatively short songs. Many progressions also suffer the same fate, becoming simplified versions of complex sentiments. Nonetheless, the record is still able to remain a pensive series of clever and sensitive indie despondency.
